About the Artist

Artist portrait

Tom is a contemporary figurative sculptor based in the UK, creating exclusive, one of a kind pieces. These are usually meticulously hand and power carved out of felled trees and logs he salvages from an iniquitous end on the roadsides of Kent & Sussex.

From a young age Tom grew up using art as a way to express himself becasue of difficulties he initially faced communicating, this led to him being referred to as 'artistically gifted'.

After largely overcoming his learning difficulties he discovered a greater passion in literature, so after completing a foundation course in Art at the Brighton College of Technology, he went on to study publishing at the Nottingham Trent University. This led to a career in the digital sphere, where his inate creativity was used for making ‘digital things’ rather than physical ones.

Some 20 years after he last made anything for the joy of it, whilst in the process of launching a start-up, he inherited some chisels from someone he cared for… So, finding some forlorn wood that was destined to rot away where it lay, he started carving. He no longer just uses hand tools, but they still play a major part in his process

There is a joy in taking something worthless, overlooked, ignored and shaping it into something else. Giving it a renewed purpose. Something beautiful. Each piece, to the artist at least, signifies the possibility of hope and redemption. Nothing is set in stone. There’s a beauty hidden inside almost everything – sometimes it just takes a little coaxing."
